The Sheepdog Project

People face threats of violence every day, ranging from large-scale terrorism to one-on-one assaults. Most people are unprepared, unequipped, and untrained to respond effectively. This weakness in the flock allows the wolves to attack with great ease and success. There are a chosen few who have the courage to place themselves in harm's way between the wolves and the flock. They are known as Sheepdogs. Tim Kennedy, combat proven Special Forces Sniper, Airborne Ranger, and Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Tim has dedicated his life to protecting others, and teaching the skills of both armed and unarmed combat to the next generation of Sheepdogs. Doctor Mike Simpson, former Special Forces Operator, Airborne Ranger, and battle-proven warrior with over three decades of military experience. Mike has made it his mission to save lives both on and off the battlefield, and to spread the ethos of what it means to be a Sheepdog. From Law enforcement officers and first responders, to Combat Veterans and Martial Arts masters, the Sheepdog Project explores every aspect of what it means to be a modern Sheepdog.

In this episode, Tim and Doc talk the origins of martial arts. They break down why you should train, and how you should approach that training. Everything from setting your goals to choosing the right school for you.

Tim Kennedy’s legend began at his local Army recruiter’s office on September 12th, 2001. His training to earn his Green Beret was featured in the book “Chosen Soldier.” Kennedy is now a Ranger qualified Special Forces Sniper with deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and multiple other deployments around the world. He is the only soldier to win the grueling 3 day All Army Combatives Tournament three times. Kennedy has a black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Modern Army Combatives. He is also one of the top ranked mixed martial arts fighters in the world, a position he achieved while simultaneously serving his country at the highest levels of special operations. He is currently ranked among the top Middleweights in the UFC. Tim has been featured on many television shows, most recently “Hunting Hitler” on the History Channel

Mike Simpson has served over three decades in the military as an Airborne Ranger, a Special Forces Operator, and finally as a Doctor of Emergency Medicine assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). Throughout his career, Mike has deployed to 17 different countries, from counter-narcotics operations in the jungles of South America, to the Global War on Terror (GWOT) in Southwest Asia and North Africa.

Along the way, Mike has been trained as a demolitions expert, SWAT Sniper, High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) parachutist, civilian paramedic, Special Forces Medic, Operations and intelligence Sergeant, and finally, a board certified Emergency Medicine Physician.

Mike is also a martial arts enthusiast, who trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. His passion for martial arts motivated him to become a practicing fight doctor. As one of the foremost experts in both tactical trauma medicine and combat sports medicine, Mike is highly sought after as a lecturer and instructor, working extensively with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters, law enforcement, and military organizations providing medical care and training. He co-stars with Tim Kennedy on Hunting Hitler on the History Channel.

He is 14-2 in a professional career that spans 6 years.  Prior to competing in mixed martial arts, he was an NCAA division II wrestler.  He joins the Mind Of The Warrior to discuss the proposed ban on IV fluids by the UFC and the United States Anti-Doping Association (USADA).

The USADA IV fluid ban, set to go into effect in the UFC in October, would prohibit fighter from receiving more than 50ml if intravenous fluid. The purpose for the ban, how it is to be implemented, and how it will affect fighter safety, has been the subject of much recent debate.

In this episode, Doc interviews Mark Tullius, the author of 25 Perfect Days, which was named one of IndieReader's Best Indie Books for 2013. An Ivy League graduate, Mark lists Chuck Palahniuk and Stephen King as the authors who most influence his own writing. In addition to his novels and dozens of short stories, Mark also has a blog which addresses a wide range of topics including mental health, fitness, parenting, and social issues.

Mark's passion for martial arts once had him competing in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Eight years after head injuries sidelined his training, Mark launched a project called Unlocking the Cage, a sociological study of why fighters are drawn to the sport of MMA, and why, despite actual and potential injuries, they continue to climb into the cage. Mark has traveled to 24 states, visited over 120 gyms, and interviewed 400 fighters and coaches from very diverse backgrounds. UTC is due to be released early 2016.
